It probably derives from the ancient city Blanda Julia, Greek-Roman age. Some refugees from Blanda might have taken refuge here to escape Saracens. Very interesting is the religious and civil architectural heritage, starting from the Mother Church St. Peter the Apostle (14^th century). Also worth seeing is the Church of the Annunciation (18th century), the Purgatory Chapel, the Cappella Mater Domini, Palazzo Ducale and Palazzo Lomonaco, where Giuseppe Garibaldi stayed in 1860. The main religious festivals are those that celebrate S. Blaise, S. Anthony, and St. Michael.
